Why Metal Cylinder Head Gasket should not change to Graphite!

It had been quite a trend that when a foremen change a cylinder head gasket which its original material is metal, they change it to graphite type of cylinder head gasket for their own reason.

But anyway, whatever reason given, there should be no reason good enough to overwrite the original technical reason from the engine manufacturer, here we wish to let our reader know that why cylinder head gasket have different material like metal and graphite,  and why one should not simply interchange this 2 kind of material.

*1   REPAIR USING DIFFERENT QUALITY

"CARBON" C/H GASKET IS FOR CASTING IRON BLOCK ENGINE AND

"METAL" C/H GASKET IS TO BE USED FOR ALUMINIUM BLOCK ENGINE.

*2   THERMAL EXPANSION OF BLOCK

IN CASE OF CASTING IRON BLOCK, THERE IS FEW THERMAL

EXPANSION, THEREFORE, IT IS SEALABLE BY NON-ASBESTOS &
CARBON MATERIAL.

MEANWHILE, THE RATE OF EXPANSION OF ALUMINIUM BLOCK ENGINE

IS BIG , THEREFORE, REPULSION OF "METAL" IS REQUIRED.

IF IT IS SUBSTITUTED "CARBON" INSTEAD OF "METAL", GASKET

IS NOT ABLE TO RESIST THERMAL EXPANSION AND IT WILL BE
CAUSE OF LEAKAGE.

EVEN IF "CARBON" GASKET FOR ALUMINIUM BLOCK ENGINE IS USED,

TROUBLE IS NOT BEGUN SOON, BUT THE ENGINE HAS SHORT LIFE
SURELY.

AND IN CASE "CARBON" C/H GASKET FOR ALUMINIUM BLOCK ENGINE

IS USED, ENGINE IS REPEATED THERMAL "EXPANSION" & "SHRINKAGE"
AND ENGINE HAS BIG PRESSURES CONTINUOUSLY.  IF WORST COMES
TO WORST .........., CYLINDER BLOCK MUST BE REPLACED.

IN CASE OIL AND COOLING WATER LEAKS OUT INSIDE OF ENGINE,

"WATER HAMMER" OCCURRED, BECAUSE WATER IS NOT PRESSURED.
AS THE RESULT, CON ROD HAS DAMAGE AND ENGINE HAS A DEATHBLOW.

Perodua Axia Engine - 1KR-DE2

When Perodua launch its new model Axia recently, one of the most interesting fact is the new engine they are using under code of 1KR-DE2.

Most of us noted that Perodua Axia is base of underpinnings Daihatsu Ayla and Toyota Agya model, but it seem the previous engine code is stated 1KR-FE, after that 1KR-DE is launched and the latest is 1KR-DE2, here some fact from Wikipedia website,

1KR-FE[edit]

1KR-FE used in Daihatsu Sirion, Toyota Aygo, Citroën C1 and Peugeot 107
The 1KR-FE is a 1.0 L (996 cc) version built in Japan and Poland. Bore is 71 mm and stroke is 84 mm, with a compression ratio of 10.5:1. Output is 67 PS (49 kW) at 6000 rpm with 91 N·m (67 lb·ft) of torque at 4800 rpm or 71 PS (52 kW) at 6000 rpm with 94 N·m (69 lb·ft) of torque at 3600 rpm. When originally on sale it met European emission standard EU4 requirements and had CO
2
levels of 109 g/km, but current applications meetEuropean emission standard EU5 and can have CO
2
levels as low as 99 g/km.[1] This engine has been given the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010[2]International Engine of the Year awards in the sub-1.0 liter category.
Applications:

1KR-DE[edit]

The 1KR-DE is the non VVT-i variant of the 1KR engine. It produces less power and torque than 1KR-FE. Output is 65 PS (48 kW) at 6000rpm and 85 N·m (63 lb·ft) of torque at 3600rpm. Bore is 71 mm and stroke is 84 mm, while the engine displacement is 1.0 L (998 cc).[3][4]
The 1KR-DE was specially designed for the Indonesian LCGC (Low Cost Green Car) market to reduce cost. The engine cylinder head cover is made from plastic-resin instead of aluminium to save 10 kg of weight. The exhaust manifold is integrated to the cylinder head together with the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor to save even more weight.[5]
Applications:

1KR-DE2[edit]

The 1KR-DE2 is the more powerful variant of the 1KR-DE engine which is redesigned by Perodua. It produces 66 PS (49 kW) at 6000rpm and 90 N·m (66 lb·ft) of torque at 3600rpm. Like the 1KR-DE, bore and stroke are at 71mm and 84mm respectively, and engine displacement remains at (998 cc)[6][7] The 1KR-DE2 achieves Euro IV emission standard, but still lacks VVT-i when compared to 1KR-FE. The compression ratio for this engine is 11:1.[8]
Applications:

Nissan TD42 engine, which found in Nissan Patrol, Safari and Sivilian 4.2, also having on the Nissan YU41 T5 in Malaysia market, there model with turbo and without turbo, for the TD42T engine with turbo bolt on, the flywheel oil seal or some call it as crankshaft rear oil seal is different from the TD42 without turbo.

For the TD42 without turbo, the oil seal is just looks like a normal oil seal with size of 86X100X10, but for the oil seal on the turbo engine, the oil seal is cover by a metal retainer, similar to the Nissan VQ series of flywheel oil seal.

Toyota 1JZ-GE and 1JZ-GTE Gasket

When customer just mention they need Toyota 1JZ engine gasket, we normally need to ask them again whether it is a 1JZ-GE or 1JZ-GTE engine.

So is it many differences between 1JZ-GE and 1JZ-GTE engine gasket, yup, actually the main content all are not the same items, the cylinder head gasket for 1JZ-GE is thinner than the 1JZ-GTE, the rocker cover gasket for 1JZ-GE using 2pcs with both different part number, where else 1JZ-GTE using 2pcs but both are the same part number. Intake and Exhaust manifold gasket also different from 1JZ-GE and 1JZ-GTE.

1JZ-GE is originally for Toyota Aristo or Crown under JZS13# model and 1JZ-GTE is originally for Toyota Mark II or Crown under JZX90 model. The most simple question is "Your 1JZ is with or without turbo".
