Daihatsu KF-DE and KF-DET Rocker Cover Gasket

In the recent issue of Japanese Motor Vehicles Guidebook, under the Daihatsu section, we can see quite a lot of the model is using their new KF 3 cylinder engine, but it is unknown if in Malaysia there are local model with the engine as Malaysia Perodua is currently using the 1KR-DE option for their 3 cylinder engine selection.

First noticing the KF series of engine when found out new Daihatsu Copen is using the KF-DET engine few years ago, and we did try to stock up some rocker cover gasket and cylinder head gasket as Malaysia K-Car fans may modified this engine in local Perodua model.

Above is the look of the rocker cover for the KF-DET model, interesting info coming when customer is looking for the KF-DE rocker cover gasket, and only notice KF-DET and KF-DE is not sharing the same rocker cover parts, even the head gasket have slight different between this 2 engine. According to our customer, it is on a Daihatsu Hijet model.

Photo below showing the KF-DE type of rocker cover which you may compare their different between them.

Part number of KF-DET rocker cover gasket is 11213-B2051 which supersede the old part number of 11213-B2050.

Nissan Almera Latio Spark Plug Replacement

When come to the spark plug replacement, Nissan Almera, Latio or Gran Livina owner with HR15DE and HR16DE engine may feel the cost is a bit expensive when the Nissan service centre quoted them the price, it may cost up to over RM500 for a spark plug change, when the normal engine oil change service may just cost around RM400 plus.

So what is the reason for this model will need to pay more on the spark plug change compare to other vehicle, let see from the above photo, to access to the spark plug removal, you need to remove the plastic intake manifold which cover the rocker cover as you can see from the above photo.

Above photo is the view when the plastic intake manifold assembly is taking out, and the intake manifold assembly can be seen at the photo below.

Photo above you can see the intake passage holes from the engine head that connected to the plastic manifold assembly, and here come the answer, whenever you change the spark plug for this engine, you need to replace the intake manifold gasket and the throttle body gasket as well.

Photo below just show the different between old spark plug and new spark plug.

From the below photo you can see the intake manifold gasket for HR16DE intake manifold gasket and the Nissan Almera is using 4 pieces separate o-ring design, both of them share the same throttle body gasket.

The Nissan original parts for the intake manifold gasket can cost up to RM160 to RM190 a set, which when include the spark plug cost, throttle body gasket and labour charge it easily reach above RM500.

And it seems many car owners is ok with the original spark plug cost but feel the pain when they heard the cost of original parts for this gasket. So they might buying the original spark plug and use the after market gasket for their spark plug change purpose.

Apart from the HR series of engine, the MR18DE and MR20DE engine which found in Slphy, Serena C26 and X-Trail T32 model may using the same design which you need to remove the intake manifold assembly when changing the spark plug.

Isuzu D-Max Oil Pan use Gasket?

Most of the modern Japanese vehicle is design as such the oil pan assembly no more using gasket as their sealing purpose, it is commonly using the gasket fluid or gasket adhesive as the sealing solution.

But still it is possible to develop the gasket base with the oil pan assembly.

Isuzu D-Max 2.5 16V with 4JK1 engine and 3.0 16V with 4JJ1 engine share the same design of oil pan assembly, but a the bottom part of the oil pan which have another small pan assembly, there have 2 design of it, one is for the 4X2 (2 wheel drive) and one is for 4X4 (4 wheel drive) model.

From the photo below, the left side is the gasket for the 4X2 model and the right side is for the 4X4 model. Both gasket are develop by the local gasket manufacturer base on the oil pan assembly and the parts is not in the OEM part list.

1KR-VET Rocker Cover Gasket

Perodua had just launched their first SUV recently name Ativa, from the vehicle specification we can found that it use 3 cylinder turbocharge 1KR-VET engine, it it sound a bit familiar with the Perodua Axia which use 1KR-DE2 engine, both from the 1KR family with the 1KR-VET bolt on with a turbocharger.

So is they using similar gasket? We take a look at one well-known Japan parts website jp-carparts.com, we found that most of the gasket part number is different for both 1KR model, from the rocker cover diagram, you may find this 1KR-VET rocker cover gasket looks similar with the 1KR-DE2 type, but it have 3 extra small square or rectangular box shape as pointed by the 3 orange arrow in the above photo.

Of course Ativa is still a new launching model which we sure not in the rush to keep this gasket in our inventories, furthermore, we still need to observe if the local Ativa 1KR-VET is really exactly the same engine with the one using in Japan.
